Travelling by train in Europe
Travelling by rail throughout Europe is a great way to get from place to place, especially if you have the time. What I like about train travel, is that you can get up and walk around, you get to see some fantastic scenery and railway stations are located in the city so you don’t waste time getting to and from the airport.
Rail passes will save you an enormous amount of money. If you intend doing a lot of travel, then use them to travel between major towns or cities. There are numerous types of passes available so you need to do a bit of planning.
Trains in Europe open for reservations approx 60 – 90 days prior to the travel date. In some countries, seat reservations are compulsory. You can also book sleepers for longer journeys, but they can be quite pricey.
A Eurail pass covers 20 countries within Europe, or if you only intend travelling to a few countries, you might like to consider a Select pass where you can choose to travel between 3, 4 or 5 adjoining countries. Then there are the regional passes for travel within a country. Passes must be purchased before you leave your home country.
